Happy New year and Welcome to the new Michael A. DeStefano Foundation website. We are confident the new year will bring many good things for all.
I would like to introduce myself. I am Michael’s mom. I am also the executive Director of the Foundation. I apologize for not being involved with updates and posts; but my life has been involved in the best interest of Mike. That is, to be his care giver. Time and patience have given me the opportunity to be more involved with the Foundation.
As the old year leaves us we have endured many steps that Mike had to accomplish in order to move on. The mission of ths foundation, is to help other families with TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) and for us to learn so that we can help, and educate families who follow.
Mike and I went to ISU (IL State University) to speak to a graduate Speech Pathology class regarding our story. It was to educate them on compassion for their future patients. We then spoke to Mike’s HS, AP Psychology class to give them another aspect of TBI. One that will teach young adults that life is valuable and not to think this could not happen to them. Looking at a peer, is impacting.
Currently Mike has just recovered from major foot surgery. He had 11 tendons lengthened and one tendon transferred. He is eager to get back into therapy. We will be starting back at Marianjoy twice a week. We are also starting at a new facillity called Next Step, to work on his core. They have several therapists, and trainers that will push Mike to his limits. something that Mike likes going back to his football days.
I’m sorry if I have rambled on; but I promise that future blogs will be short and give the message. I look forward to keeping everyone updated.
